Expectations and Grading Policy

Introduction

The guitar is one of the greatest musical instrument invented by man. It's range and versatility enable the player to enjoy all styles of music from many cultures and periods in history. Playing of the guitar can be a wonderful experience, regardless of the players skill level. It also brings great pleasure to those who around to hear the fabulous sounds created by those who take the study seriously.





Course Expectations

Students in intermediate guitar shall build on their skills in guitar performance and shall persue an indepth study of the instrument in order to gain a broad historical and cultural perspective of the instrument, music and well known composers. The class will also have a heavy emphasis on music theory, in order to better prepare students with aspirations for music study in college.



Grading Policy

Tests

Assessment will take place on a regular basis. Students will prepare a piece of music, scales or other guitar exercises, and perform for the class. Make-ups will be held on the following day. Unexcused absences or lack of preparation on test days will result in an automatic loss of one grade point.

Written Assignments

Students will be expected to complete written assignments both in and outside of class. A report and an oral presentation on a well known guitarist or composer will be due at the end of each semester.

Attendance

Attendance points shall be accrued by one point per day of attendance. Tardies will result in a loss of attendance points and assignment to the school tardy room.



Rules

Equipment

1. Starting the second week of each semester, each student will be required daily to provide an acoustic guitar, in good working order. Sharing of instruments is greatly discouraged.

2. All instruments and cases must have a nametag signifying the owners name and period.

3. Each student will be issued printed music and/or guitar books for their use. Loss or damage of these materials shall be assessed at the end of each semester.

4. A folder or binder will be required by each student. Materials will not be issued to anyone who is not so equipped.


Behavior

5. Socializing during practice sessions will be discouraged. When student behavior becomes a deterrent to individual or class progress, the student will be removed from the situation and disciplinary procedures shall be followed (see below).

6. Adherance to school rules and the process of school disciplinary policy will be observed whereupon a student has these type of issues (refer to the 2002/2003 PVHS "Guide to School Discipline").

7. The procedure that the teacher shall follow in the case of disciplinary issues shall be:

Conference with student

Class detention

Parent/ Counselor conference

Referral to the office.
